Cortisone Injections for Foot & Ankle Pain

Targeted anti-inflammatory injections for heel pain, joint pain, and inflamed tissue.

What Does a Cortisone Shot Do?

A cortisone injection delivers a strong anti-inflammatory medicine directly to the painful area. By calming inflammation at the source, it can relieve pain and make it easier to stretch, walk, and stay active while the underlying problem heals.

Cortisone injections are commonly used for:

  • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
  • Morton’s neuroma (a pinched nerve between the toes)
  • Bursitis and capsulitis
  • Arthritis in the foot or ankle joints
  • Other localized inflammation

What to Expect

Before any injection, Dr. Opensky examines your foot and confirms what’s causing your pain, using in-office imaging when needed.

During and after your visit:

  • The injection is quick and done right in the office
  • The area is often numbed first for comfort
  • Many people feel improvement within a few days
  • We pair injections with a plan, such as stretching, orthotics, and footwear changes, for longer-lasting results
  • Injections in the same area are limited, so we use them thoughtfully

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a cortisone injection hurt?

You may feel a brief pinch and some pressure. The area is often numbed first, and any soreness afterward usually fades within a day or two.

How long does a cortisone shot last?

It varies from person to person and condition to condition. Some people get relief for weeks, others for months, especially when the injection is combined with other treatment.

How many cortisone injections can I get?

Repeated injections in the same spot can weaken tissue, so they’re limited. Dr. Opensky will recommend what’s safe for you.

Are there side effects?

Temporary soreness is the most common. Cortisone can also raise blood sugar for a short time, so let us know if you have diabetes.

What if cortisone doesn’t work?

There are other options, including PRP therapy, shockwave therapy, and custom orthotics. We’ll talk through what makes sense for you.
